TUESDAY RECAP: COMMUNITY UPDATE
Save The Crew Updates
2008 MLS Cup Anniversary:
As we know, 2018 marks the ten year anniversary of our first and only MLS cup victory. Goals from Ale Moreno, Chad Marshall, and Frankie Hejduk sealed the win for the Crew. On Saturday members from the 2008 championship team came to Mapfre to celebrate their anniversary. Players such as Gino Padula, William Hesmer, Frankie, and Duncan Oughton received their honors before running across the field to the Nordecke to celebrate – and to join in the “Save The Crew!” chants. These legendary players from Crew lore are a part of our club’s great history. Perhaps, in another 10 years we will celebrate the 2008 MLS Cup win AND the 2018 MLS Cup win. Save The Crew!
Hilltonia Middle School:
The kids from Hilltonia had an AMAZING time at the game on Saturday thanks to your generous Community Assist ticket donations. Unfortunately, we did not come out with all three points, but the kids still enjoyed seeing members from the 2008 MLS Cup team. Stay tuned in the upcoming months for more opportunities to assist our community.
Members of the Save The Crew team will be at the Italian festival from 12-7 on Saturday (10/6) and Sunday (10/7). Come out to see us at another excellent community event in Columbus. Join us for food, fun, and talk of Saving the Crew. You can signup to volunteer as well. Don’t worry – we’re going to be set up near a big-screen TV, so you’ll be able to see the Crew match in Montreal as well.
Columbus Tops List of Rising Startup Cities in Forbes
Although not surprising to us living in Columbus (as we all know that this city has a lot of intelligent people, e.g., the STC movement), the city was voted as the top city for rising startup companies. Columbus finished first, as the Ohio capital scored highly for its college presence, low costs (business and living), increase in venture capital deals, and the high number of funds launched since 2013. Columbus has jump-started a viable startup culture thanks to the role of venture funds for some of the city’s biggest companies. Nationwide Mutual, State Automobile Mutual Insurance and Grange Insurance created funds in recent years to support startups. The inner-workings of these major corporations have increased the viability for start-ups across the city. Simply stated: policy incentives and major companies encouraged growth in our community and we have started to see the benefits. We don’t say Columbus is Massive for no reason, right? Please see the Forbes article for more information.
We had the chance to creep up on NYCFC in the standings, but failed to find the full three points. The tie doesn’t change much of anything in terms of the bottom half of the playoff table. A win over Montreal on Saturday will seal a play-off birth for the Crew. Obviously, it is ideal for Columbus to end the season with a streak of wins. However, we are in control of our own destiny. Our final opportunities are as follows: Montreal, Orlando, and finally, Minnesota.
You can also watch Wil Trapp and Zack Steffen play for the USMNT in friendlies on October 11 vs. Colombia and October 16 vs. Peru.
Speaking of Wil Trapp, check out the Captain’s new armband!
