SaveTheCrew – Hardest Working Weekends

For many people in Columbus, Saturday and Sunday are the weekend. Days off. Days to relax, reflect on the week, and enjoy time with family and friends.

For #SaveTheCrew, weekends are not days off, but days on. Our team is fighting to keep our team 7 days a week, and this past weekend was no exception.

On Saturday morning, several volunteers woke up early to spread the world to Columbus’ Hispanic community at the Westland Flea Market on W. Broad Street. Volunteers raffled off tickets to an upcoming game and shared information about Project 2019 and all the latest news from SaveTheCrew — todo en español.

Later in the day, soccer fans headed over to celebrate #SaveTheCrew night with the Columbus Eagles FC, held at Otterbein University’s Memorial Stadium. The Eagles are central Ohio’s women’s team (WPSL) now in its fifth year. The Eagles have been a proud supporter of #SaveTheCrew since the movement began and were happy to partner with us at this event. According to Mark Wise, CEO of the Columbus Eagles FC, “The Columbus soccer community is massive, and Eagles FC are thrilled to be a part of it. The fans of Crew SC have come out time and time again to support us, and I’m eager to support them.” Earlier this year, several Eagles players partnered with SaveTheCrew at a Community Soccer Day, a clinic for kids aged 6-14, held at Resolute Athletic Complex.

While Crew fans and Eagles fans tailgated together outside, the Eagles players warmed up in special #SaveTheCrew shirts on the field. STC volunteers also sold raffle tickets to raise funds for STC activities and gave away signs, magnets, and stickers to soccer supporters.

The Eagles took on Empire United and flew away victorious with a score of 4-0 in spite of an early end to the match due to the weather. The match summary is available here. The club now has a record 11 points in the WPSL and sits third in their division behind Cleveland and Motor City.

Fear not, Cleveland area residents, as you too will soon have a chance to support both STC and your local Cleveland soccer team. Join us for #SaveTheCrew night with the Cleveland FC on June 24, at 3pm, as the Cleveland FC take on FC Syracuse at Don Shula Stadium on the campus of John Carroll University. The gate opens at 2pm and tickets are on sale now!

Even on our days off, the #SaveTheCrew movement continues to demonstrate our massive commitment to our community. Watch out, Columbus Crew players. Your supporters might be competing with you for the title of being the nation’s hardest working team.
